Open source travels the same way. Code you can read crosses borders, languages, licences and decades without anyone's permission. You can fork it, translate it, teach it, or take it somewhere it was never designed to go. None of that requires a conversation with a vendor.

The medium is part of the argument. Brush strokes and paper grain, on a shirt about software. Engineering has room for taste, and the best code shares one quality with the best painting: someone else can see how it was made.
