Privacy policy
Last updated: 31 August 2026
Digital Independence is an online shop and publication operated by Sarah Benedikt from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
We currently sell and ship physical products to customers in Canada, excluding Quebec. This policy explains what personal information we collect from Canadian visitors and customers, why we collect it, who receives it, where it may be processed, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
This shop runs on Shopify and our products are printed and shipped by Printful. Some of your information necessarily passes through these companies. They are named below rather than described simply as "trusted partners", because a privacy policy should tell you who actually handles your information.
What we collect and why
When you browse
Depending on your privacy choices and our cookie settings, we may collect your IP address, approximate location derived from it, device and browser information, the pages you visit, how you interact with the site, and the website or link that referred you.
We use strictly necessary information to operate the website, shopping cart, checkout and security features.
Where required, non-essential cookies and similar technologies are used only after you have given the required consent. Analytics information helps us understand how people use the site and which articles and guides are useful.
When you place an order
We collect the information needed to process and deliver your order, including your name, email address, shipping address, billing address, telephone number if you provide one, the products you purchase, and transaction information.
Payment card details are entered through the payment provider's secure payment fields. We do not store your full payment card number.
We use this information to process payment, fulfil and deliver your order, provide customer support, prevent fraud and meet our legal and accounting obligations.
When you subscribe to the newsletter
We collect your email address and newsletter engagement information, such as whether messages were delivered, opened or clicked, depending on the tracking settings used by our email provider.
We use this information to send and improve the Digital Independence newsletter.
Buying something from the shop does not automatically subscribe you to the newsletter. Subscription is a separate choice.
When you contact us
We receive the information you choose to include in your message, together with your email address and any other information needed to respond.
We use it to answer your question, provide customer support, resolve problems and maintain appropriate business records.
Who receives your information
We use selected service providers to operate the shop:
| Who | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Information needed to operate the store, checkout, customer accounts and order records | To operate the shop and process orders |
| Shopify Payments | Payment and transaction information needed to process payments and handle payment disputes | To take payment and help prevent fraud |
| Printful | Your name, shipping address, contact details needed for fulfilment, and the products ordered | To print and ship your order |
| Klaviyo | Your email address and newsletter engagement information, if you subscribe | To send and measure the newsletter |
| Google Analytics | Website usage and device information, if you consent | To understand how the website is used |
We may also disclose personal information to service providers that support these services, where necessary to operate the shop, or where disclosure is required or permitted by law.
We do not sell your personal information or share it with third parties for their own advertising.
Cookies and analytics
The site uses strictly necessary cookies for functions such as the shopping cart, checkout, security and, where applicable, account login.
With the required consent, we may also use non-essential cookies and similar technologies for analytics or other optional functions.
You can use the cookie banner to manage non-essential cookies. Where applicable, the Your Privacy Choices page also lets you manage certain privacy preferences.
We honour applicable browser-based privacy signals where required by law.
Newsletter
The newsletter is sent through Klaviyo.
Every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link. You can also contact hello@dimerch.com to unsubscribe.
We do not add customers to the newsletter simply because they purchased something.
We may retain the minimum information necessary to record that you unsubscribed so that we do not send you future marketing messages.
Where your information goes
Some of our service providers are based outside Canada, including in the United States. Your personal information may therefore be transferred to, stored in, or processed in countries other than Canada.
These transfers are necessary for services such as operating the store, processing payments, fulfilling orders, sending communications and providing analytics.
Privacy laws in those countries may differ from Canadian law. Information processed there may also be accessible to courts, law-enforcement agencies or other authorities where required by applicable law.
We use service providers that are subject to contractual, technical or organizational safeguards appropriate to the services they provide.
What we don't do with your information
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not share your information with third parties for their own advertising.
You are not added to the newsletter because you purchased something. Newsletter subscription is a separate choice.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including to provide services, maintain business and accounting records, resolve disputes, prevent fraud and comply with legal obligations.
Order records are retained for as long as required or reasonably necessary for tax, accounting, legal and business purposes.
Newsletter information is kept while you are subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we may retain the minimum information necessary to maintain your unsubscribe preference and comply with our legal obligations.
Analytics information is retained according to the retention settings configured in our Google Analytics account.
Messages and support requests are kept for as long as reasonably necessary to handle the request, maintain appropriate records, resolve disputes or comply with legal obligations.
Canadian privacy rights
We handle personal information in accordance with applicable Canadian privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) where it applies.
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you and request a correction if it is inaccurate or incomplete. You can also withdraw consent for uses of your information that are not necessary to provide a product or service you have requested.
Some information cannot be deleted immediately where we are legally required to retain it, or where it is reasonably necessary to complete a transaction, prevent fraud, resolve a dispute, maintain required business records or comply with a legal obligation.
To make a privacy request, contact us at hello@dimerch.com. We may need to verify your identity before providing access to or changing personal information.
We will handle your request within the time required by applicable law.
If you have a privacy concern, please contact us first at hello@dimerch.com so we can try to resolve it.
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information against loss, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and misuse.
Payment card details are processed through our payment providers and are not stored by us in full.
No internet-based service can be guaranteed to be completely secure. If a privacy or security incident occurs that triggers a legal notification obligation, we will follow the applicable breach-notification requirements.
Children
This shop is not directed at children.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children where doing so is prohibited by applicable law. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact hello@dimerch.com and we will review the request.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our services, data practices or legal obligations change.
The revised version will be posted on this page and the date at the top will be updated.
Where a significant change affects how we use personal information and applicable law requires notice or consent, we will provide that notice or obtain that consent as required.
