What Is Emulation? Playing Classic Games on Modern Hardware

Emulation is software that simulates vintage hardware (old game consoles, computers, arcade machines), allowing you to play classic games on modern devices. An emulator recreates the original system's behavior in code.

Why It Matters for Digital Independence

Emulation is gaming preservation. Original Commodore 64s, Atari cartridges, arcade cabinets are disappearing - rotting hardware, unavailable parts. Emulation archives these experiences for future generations. It's also independence: you own the games (legitimately), run them when you want, on any device. No corporate licensing gates, no "service discontinuation" messages.

Example

A 1983 arcade cabinet of Pac-Man exists as real hardware in maybe 500 places globally. Via emulation, billions of people can play the exact same experience - future-proof preservation that doesn't require maintaining 40-year-old hardware.
